My Bordello Visit...

I remember when my good bud and partner with puretexan.com Mark Priest called and told me he found a building to buy for the location of his jewelry store Legend Jewelers.

He was really excited and should have been, he went from a small shop opened with all of his savings to a successful large store in no time.
He told me the building was in the Historic District of San Angelo Texas, the building was from the turn of the century and still had the style, architecture and feel of that time period.

Oh and yeah Randy, it has a Bordello upstairs that came with it.

Say What??

"Yup, the last tenant was a hardware store an they used the upstairs for storage but it is so cool up there."

Mark dug into the background of the space above his future Jewelry store site and uncovered some interesting history.
Miss Hatties Bordello was one of the last to be closed down by the Texas Rangers, shutting it's doors in 1946. It had been a destination for Cowpokes, Cotton farmers, Ranchers, Cedar Hackers, Gamblers, Judges, Law Officers, Politicos and all kinds for a long time before it was shuttered.

A lot of the original furnishings was left in the rooms that consisted of a couple of receiving parlors, sitting parlors, gambling room and of course the girls boudoirs.

Mark began cleaning up and restoring the area to it's former glory, in the process he uncovered many coll items, a turn of the century Whiskey bottle hidden behind a base board, a 58 star U.S. flag and numerous items left behind from Miss Hattie and the girls and a tunnel devised for the clandestine entry and exit of men that could be ruined by being associated with such a place.

I remember Mark searching Antique shops from border to border to find items authentic to the time period to complete the space, nothing Plastic or made of modern materials was to touch that space, Mark kept it authentic.

Mark then opened the space as a Museum, offering tours to those desiring a glimpse back into the day when as the Texas Highways states "For 50 years, soldiers, cowboys and travelers were attracted to a San Angelo institution, a brothel they knew simply as Miss Hatties"- Jack Lowry - March 1989 Texas Highways.

I finally got a chance to visit Mark and see Miss Hatties myself sometime around 2005, it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen, to stand in the quiet of the building all alone, close my eyes and imagine the sounds that had echoed through the historic halls was amazing... The laughter, the negations, the fighting, the creaking sound of the old beds under the weight of the worlds oldest occupation, the chatter of the working girls, the men trading stock and land at the poker table... wow.

I came home and told my Wife Chantel, "I want a Brothel".

See images I took of Miss Hatties below.
